Dr Laeeq Malik is a cancer physician with subspecialty interest in the treatment of breast cancer and genitourinary malignancies (prostate, renal, testis and bladder). He undertook postgraduate specialist training in medicine and Medical Oncology in Adelaide and Canberra. He subsequently obtained two years of additional training in breast, genitourinary oncology and experimental therapeutics at the prestigious Institute for Drug Development in San Antonio, United States. The Institute for Drug Development is widely recognized for being the largest oncology drug development research program in the world and based at National Cancer Institute designated Cancer Centre with highest level recognition in the United States. During his research training, he played an important collaborative role in the development of several novel agents. He also has a particular interest in conducting early phase clinical trials. He has significant experience in conducting various types of phase I and II oncology trials such as first-in-human, multi-arm phase Ib, organ dysfunction (liver and renal), bioequivalence, food effect, drug-drug interaction, QTc interval studies, and studies with extensive pharmacology and pharmacogenomics guided designs.

Dr Malik has been a Principal investigator, Co-Principal Investigator and sub-investigator on several phase I and II trials locally and overseas. More recently, he has contributed significantly to the initiation of early phase clinical trials at the Canberra Hospital. He is currently Co-Principal Investigator on phase I trials of new cancer agents in patients with refractory and relapsed solid tumours in collaboration with investigators from University of Canberra and Australian National University. He has been involved in the publication of >25 journal articles and invited book chapters.
